Are the grades truly accurate if retakes are allowed?

In a standards based school such as Campbell High, a grade measures what a student knows and is able to do.  Allowing retakes of summative assignments is a better reflection of each student’s true knowledge and skill level at the time of the completion of the retake of the summative assignment. Since all students are permitted to retake summative assignments once to improve his or her knowledge base or skill level, we can see that the results are an accurate portrayal of what a student knows or is able to do.  The opportunity to retake a summative assignment fosters Campbell High’s core values of character, courage, respect, and responsibility by creating an atmosphere where self directed learning is welcomed.
