For most English classes, the core competencies are Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary, Literature, and Research.  A core competency would NOT be reading and understanding Huck Finn; rather, that knowledge would be part of the Literature competency.

In a Band class, competencies are Perform Music, Read Music, Respond to Music, and Relate to Music.  A core competency would NOT be the ability to read a b flat scale; rather, that skill would be part of the Read Music competency.

In an Algebra class, the core competencies would be Algebra, Functions, and Problem Solving.  A core competency would NOT be to calculate percentages; rather, that skill would be part of the Algebra competency.
